Conspiracy theorists and fervent ideologues of all stripes, forgetting that they too are part of the audience, see evil or coldly self-interested illusionists behind painful social outcomes. Independent thinkers like John, and powerful if musty books like Peter Laslett's wonderful THE WORLD WE HAVE LOST: ENGLAND BEFORE THE INDUSTRIAL AGE (1965), remind us that better explanations are available. Very unfortunately, though, few will pay enough attention to heed or amend them. My guess is that "creeping feudalism," perhaps like modern cell biology, is a subset of the Information Age itself. If so, stopping it may well be impossible, but steering it is urgent indeed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
